Life After People

Have you ever wondered what would happen to the earth if people disappeared?  What would happen to our pets, all of our more prized possessions, bridges, buildings?  The History Channel has thought about this and has a DVD that explains just what would happen to the earth.

The DVD Life After People explores what earth would be like after the sudden disappearance of the human race.  The DVD begins with the day following the disappearance and continues to 10,000 years afterward.

From The History Channel’s website:

Using feature film quality visual effects and top experts in the fields of engineering, botany, ecology, biology, geology, climatology and archeology, Life After People provides an amazing visual journey through the ultimately hypothetical.

The 1986 nuclear power plant accident at Chernobyl and its aftermath provides a riveting and emotional case study of what can happen after humans have moved on. Life After People goes to remote islands off the coast of Maine to search for traces of abandoned towns, beneath the streets of New York to see how subway tunnels may become watery canals, to the Montana wilderness to divine the destiny of the bears and wolves.

I was amazed at all the information I learned while watching this DVD.  Without humans around to perform maintenance on building, cars, streets, etc., most structures will be nothing but piles in 300-500 years - even some stone and concrete structures.  After 1,000 years cities will not be recognizable due to plant and animal life that have taken over and after 10,000 years there is the possibility that Mt. Rushmore may be the only proof that humans even inhibited the earth.

It’s a scary thought to think that all the scrapbooking pages we labor over, pictures we take and preserve, and home videos of the kids will one day decay and rot and be lost forever.

I have a copy of Life After People DVD to give to a reader.  If you would like to be entered in the drawing plase visit the Life After People website and leave a comment about something that intriques you about the DVD.  This giveaway will end on Friday, August 1, 2008.

Oh wow - that really does sound neat. I am intrigued by the whole idea! I think it’d be an interesting study, too, for my homeschooled son :)

Wow - what a frightening concept. It looks like a very interesting show - and thought provoking. I’d never considered the ecological changes that would take place without “us” here.

I was brought up in the Catholic faith, and there is always this focus on what goes on for humans after life… heaven/hell. So this idea and focus on what happens for other living species and the world is a cool concept and I would love to know what The History Channel thinks about that. Please enter me in the giveaway. Thank you. =)

It boggles my mind to think that there would be nothing but piles (kinda sounds like the setting of Wall-e).
I would like to be entered in the drawing.
    Thank you.

I think the process of the wild reclaiming cities and towns - and how it would/might happen - is the most interesting to me. I’m definitely interested in the drawing.
