A Kitchen Timer May Save My Sanity…
January 16, 2008or what’s left of it.
I have been trying to potty train my 3 year old son, we will call him SuperBoy (because that is what he calls himself, go figure). He knows how to use the potty, wipe himself, flush the totliet, and wash his hands. He just doesn’t do it. I guess he figures he is too busy.
I have tried letting him pick out new big boy underware for him to wear. Didn’t work.
I have tried letting him go around naked. Didn’t work.
I have tried multiple potty books. Didn’t work.
I have tried toys just for potty time. Didn’t work.
I have tried bribery. Didn’t work.
I have tried punishment. Didn’t work.
I have tried a reward system. Didn’t work.
I have even tried the DVD Potty Power. While he likes to watch it, it doesn’t make he want to use it. Didn’t Work.
My new idea is a kitchen timer. I am going to start at 15 minutes. Every time the timer goes off we are going to go use the potty. Superboy will sit on the pot for at least 5 minutes, unless he uses it before then. If this works, please Lord, then after a week I will increase the timer to 20 minutes, and then 30 minutes, and so on.
If the event this doesn’t work, does anyone have any other ideas?

Sorry….no tips here. You’ve done everything I did with Emma to potty-train her. But I know that I pulled my hair out for a while because it seemed like she just wasn’t getting it, then all of a sudden….poof! She was potty-trained. Now at 3 1/2 she doesn’t even wet the bed at night.
So hang in there, it will happen!

If that doesn’t work, it may be time to take a break from it. I tried all the things you listed with my son, too, and like Jacki said…one day he just got it. Now that I’m potty training my 2nd, I’m a lot less worried about when it will happen and everyone is a lot more relaxed.
I know it’s frustrating, but hang in there. It’ll happen!

Potty training is just a PITB. We waited longer with my daughter, but it was still a challenge. We did small rewards, and charts, and potty books, and timers. We finally got number 1 down, but #2 just was the bane of our existence..what finally worked was major bribes. Daddy promised her a ($40!) doll that she really wanted, if she would only poop in the potty…then if she pooped in the potty so many times in a row, she got some other ridiculously expensive prize. But, she hasn’t had a poopy accident since!
