No Caffeine for Mommies-To-Be

There is an article on CNN that states a recent study being published in the Monday’s Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology concluded that pregnant women who had 200mg of caffeine a day was twice as likely to have a miscarriage as oppose to a pregnant women who did not have any caffeine.

200mg. That is one to two cups of coffee, two to three cups of tea, one to three energy drinks, or about five cans of soda.

The study follows 1,063 pregnant women. The miscarriage rate for women who had no caffeine was 12.5%. However, the miscarriage rate for rate who had 200mg of caffeine a day was 25.5%. That is about 271 women who miscarried assumingly because they had more than 200mg of caffeine a day. That seems like a lot me.

I didn’t drink caffeine while pregnant. I was so scared of doing anything wrong during my first pregnancy that I was probably overcautious and still ended up having an emergency c-section at 32 weeks for a reason I could not have prevented.

I have some questions about this study though and guess I will have try to read the study when it is published. Some of the questions that stick out to me are: What were the women’s health situation before they became pregnant? Were they smokers? Where they drinkers? Could there have been other issues that caused the miscarriages?

If you get a chance, read the article and let me know what you think.

Yeah, you sometimes have to wonder about studies. My mom drank coffee and smoked with both me and my sister but we turned out fine. I think. :-)
